1. Something that got me thinking this week…
I am VERY good at procrastinating. Sure, I do get a lot done, but it always seems to happen in the eleventh hour. I watched a really good TED talk this week, Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator, by Tim Urban. (Click here to watch it.) First, he delivers this talk SO well. Second, it is very funny. Third, he includes a slide that I have thought of over a dozen times this week since watching his talk. The image is of a bunch of tiny squares, each representing one week, adding up to 90 years of life. When seen this way, one can realize that our time on this planet is not infinite. And in terms of procrastination, the realization that you have already knocked out a chunk of your life (in my case, more than half) can help give you the shove you need to do that next big thing you are putting off. Take a look at the image below… each square represents one week of a 90-year life. Life is flying by… what are you waiting for?
2. Goal I’ve set…
I’ve been talking about writing a book for over 15 years. The above “life box” exercise helped me to set a specific goal… I will complete my book before my 50th birthday, which is 6 months away. (And I won’t wait until month 5 to get started. Haha!)
3. The most ridiculous word I heard this week (and maybe ever)…
The local paper has started its newest scare campaign… this year’s flu season. Of course, so-called experts are predicting a massive flu surge. And they’ve gone one step further, combining the hype with the current COVID-19 pandemic, creating the latest, most creative word yet… “twindemic.” While I wish the fearmongering was aimed at motivating people to get as healthy and strong as possible (i.e., exercising, eating well, managing stress, getting ample rest, and taking proper nutritional supplements), it isn’t. It’s to get people to line up for yet another shot.
I can’t/won’t tell you whether or not to get any of these shots, but will STRONGLY encourage you to be very careful not to make the mistake of thinking these shots are THE ANSWER to your health concerns. We are overweight, out of shape, weak, and immune-compromised as a nation. No pill, shot, lotion, or potion will ever change that. If you’re excited to get the shots, then get excited and get in line, but make sure you get excited about adopting a healthier lifestyle as well. And don’t let words like “twindemic” stress you out, paralyze you with fear, or trick you into thinking there is something stronger and more powerful than your inborn, innate, natural ability to be well. (I will expound on this in next week’s blog post, which will be posted at drbizjak.com on Tuesday.)
