1. Something I learned this week…
I heard Dr. Jamil Zaki on a podcast this week. He is a Stanford psychologist and author of Hope for Cynics: The Surprising Science of Human Goodness. I learned that there is a difference between optimism and hope. Optimism is the belief that the future will turn out well. Hope is the belief that the future could turn out well. According to Zaki… “I know that sounds like a small distinction, but it’s not, because in the uncertainty that hope gives you, that uncertain future makes room for our actions to matter, right? Whereas optimism is complacent, hope is action-oriented.” I love that! Assuming things will turn out great can’t be as effective as taking action to help ensure that it does. If interested, you can listen to the whole podcast by clicking here. It’s a good one!
2. Wellness tip…
Fresh Fiber First. Before every meal or snack, have some fresh, raw fruit or vegetable. This will ensure you’re getting more fiber (most Americans get way too little), it will aid in the digestion of your meal, will provide added vitamins and minerals, help you get more servings of fruits and vegetables (most Americans definitely do not get enough), and you’ll feel full faster (thus, you’ll eat less food). Grab a couple of carrot sticks, a handful of grapes or blueberries, or whatever you prefer. It is a GREAT habit to get into. I’ve seen patients lose 5-10 pounds with just this simple action. And… you aren’t cutting anything out. You benefit even if the meal you eat afterward is less-than-healthy.😜
3. Quote I love…
“Laziness kills ambition.
Anger kills wisdom.
Fear kills dreams.
Ego kills growth.
Jealousy kills peace.
Doubt kills confidence.
Now read that right to left.”
