1. Documentary we watched this week…
There is a new documentary called Shark Whisperer (on Netflix) that we watched this week. “Marine conservationist and social media activist Ocean Ramsey fearlessly swims with sharks in this documentary about her risky mission to protect them.” The footage is stunning, beautiful, and unbelievable. Ocean Ramsey is obsessed with sharks, feels they have been mislabeled as monsters, are in danger of being wiped out (which would devastate the ocean eco-system), and has dedicated her life to educating others and protecting these sharks. I was surprised to find out that over 100 million sharks are killed each year. She also made the point that there are only approximately ten human deaths each year from sharks, and if humans were actually at great risk from sharks, that number would be way higher. Millions of people are surfing, swimming, and diving in the ocean daily, and these sharks are in these waters with them, yet there are very few attacks. Of course, she draws a lot of criticism from the general public (saying what she’s doing is too risky) and scientists (saying she’s not a true scientist). I say she is doing what she loves and is passionate about, understands the risks, and it’s her choice to take the risk. And I believe that the data she has collected with what she has done exceeds what most of the scientific critics will ever collect. She’s IN THE WATER… WITH THE SHARKS! And she is making an impact… recently helping legislation get passed in Hawaii that protects sharks… as well as having over 1 million followers on Instagram alone (@oceanramsey). I was pleasantly surprised with this documentary, it got me thinking, and blew my mind a bit. Watch the trailer below…
2. Quote I love…
“I wouldn’t have seen it, if I didn’t believe it.” – Marshall McLuhan
Most people need to see it to believe it. But there is huge power in the law of attracting what we think about and believe. As we learn more about quantum physics, it is becoming clearer how our thoughts affect our physiology, our outcomes, and our success. So, think big… think success… think unlimited. On the flip side, this quote could relate to seeing things in a skewed way because of the beliefs we have. I regularly check on the things I believe to be true, the way I behave, and the way I interact in the world to make sure that I am not letting outdated beliefs, incorrect biases, or inaccurate views influence me to see things the way I WANT them to be… instead of how they ACTUALLY are.
3. News that caught my attention this morning…
Felix Baumgartner, the guy who had the record-breaking jump from the stratosphere back in 2012, died yesterday in a paragliding accident. Hearing that news reminded me of that incredible jump he made, which led me to re-watch it again. WOW! It’s one of the more impressive feats, if not the most impressive feat, I’ve ever seen. You can watch a re-cap of that jump below (3-minute video) or by clicking here. It also got me thinking about risk… which is often criticized. But this guy died doing what he loved and experienced life in a way few ever will. It reminded me of that great quote from the movie Braveheart… “Every man dies, not every man truly lives.” If interested, you can read the short CNN article about Felix, the paragliding crash, and some of his feats by clicking here.
