1. Something I spent time thinking about this week (and thought I’d share with you)…
Ever tried to help someone who wouldn’t let you help them? Especially when they really need help. Frustrating, eh? Oh… and exhausting… confusing… annoying… etc. A good friend, Dr. Noel Abood, shared a very good, and helpful, way of thinking about trying to help as many people as possible. He shared this with me approximately two decades ago, over lunch, and I have never forgotten it. I think of it regularly to remind myself how to best continue helping as many people as possible. Check out the quick video below…
2. Quote I love…
“It is easier to act your way into a new way of thinking than it is to think your way into a new way of acting.” -Tim Ferriss
(From his not-yet-released book, tentatively called The No Book, which he describes as “a blueprint for how to get everything you want by saying no to everything you don’t.”)
3. My top three success techniques…
Want more success in life? Be more deliberate about it. Applying techniques and strategies is a way of ensuring better outcomes. Here are my TOP 3 success techniques…
(1.) Delayed gratification
This is “the ability to resist an immediate temptation in favor of larger reward in the future.” I try to do the hardest things first… which ensures those get done… and increases my odds of completing what needs to be completed. (Example: If you don’t like veggies, eat them first, saving your favorite part of the meal for last.)
(2.) Associate pain or pleasure
All human behavior is driven by gaining pleasure and avoiding pain. If there is something I want to achieve, I associate a ton of pleasure with the outcome, or massive pain with not achieving it. (Example: If you don’t love working out, vividly think about how much better your body will look and how much better you’ll feel if you do… and how much worse your body will look and how bad you’ll feel if you don’t.)
(3.) Modeling
Find someone doing what you want to do, or that has something you’d like to have, and do exactly what they are doing, or did, to get it. This is my #1 technique for success. The more exact you follow the path that person took… what they did, how they did it, how they were thinking, etc… the greater the chance you’ll get that same outcome. (Example: If you’re in sales, spend a day with the #1 sales person in the company. Note how they structure their day, how they talk, how they dress, how they think. Then… DO THOSE THINGS!)
