1. My latest adventure…
Last week was my daughter Emma’s birthday. We decided to fly down to see her at school, take her to lunch, and give her presents. I flew my Piper Arrow into Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, took an Uber to the university, grabbed lunch, took an Uber back to the airport, and flew home. We were able to make that whole trip in about six hours. One of the coolest parts of the trip… my other daughter, Quincy, took the controls for the flight home, getting her second flight lesson. See the pic of her and me just before take-off. Fun!
2. A supplement worth looking into…
I had heard and read a lot about curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric), and was impressed with what I was finding. It has been studied extensively and is being used in research projects at many of the largest hospitals. If you search “curcumin” on Pubmed (a free site where you can search through peer-reviewed research papers), almost 14,000 studies pop up, with over 5,000 related to cancer. The bottom line is that it is one of the most potent natural anti-inflammatories that I could find. I take it when I have any injuries, have taken it on and off for general health purposes, and will likely add it to my daily regimen for overall wellness. The brand I use and sell in my practice is Meriva, from the company Thorne. See the image below to see all the things Curcumin has been studied and used for… which is why I think it is a great supplement to take daily. You can get it on Amazon here, or get it cheaper in our office.
3. What I am researching now…
I have so many patients that complain of poor sleep, most Americans have sleep-related issues, and I, myself, have periodic issues with sleep. So, I delved in to learn more. I have read numerous articles, research papers, and books on the subject. I am currently listening to the audio version of Why We Sleep: Unlocking the power of Sleep and Dreams, by Matthew Walker, PhD. I am only just getting started, but loving the info. Three interesting facts I’ve learned so far… (1.) Caffeine has a half-life of 5-7 hours, meaning 5-7 hours after you consume caffeine, only half of it is out of your system; (2.) Less than 6-7 hours of sleep per night crushes your immune system, causes weight gain, and is linked to just about every chronic illness, including more than doubling your chances for getting cancer; (3.) There truly are morning people and night owls. Some of us have sleep cycles that are wired for getting to bed early and rising early, while others do much better staying up late and sleeping in longer. I’ll share more as I learn more. If interested in that book, you can order it here.
