1. Nature scene I saw this morning…
Our home gym is on the second floor, with the entire back wall being windows which allows us to look out over the lake that we live on. It definitely makes working out easier. And it’s like watching a National Geographic special every day… the wildlife behavior and diversity is incredible. Watch this quick clip of a great blue heron swallowing a large bluegill with one gulp. I didn’t get to video him catching the fish, which would have been much more impressive footage. Note the size of the fish in the blue heron’s throat. Crazy! I am constantly reminded of the quote… “Nature is neither cruel nor kind, but utterly indifferent to all suffering.”
2. Nutrition tip that might help…
I take at least 5,000 I.U. of vitamin D per day. (I use Liquid Vitamin D3 with K2 from Ortho Molecular.) I believe this is a good dose for most adults. And I believe everyone should be taking vitamin D. It is I great idea to have your vitamin D levels tested by your doctor to see where your levels are at. Based on that number, you can increase or decrease the amount you take. Vitamin D deficiency is rampant, and can contribute to a whole host of health problems. Most of you know this, as I have talked about it before, so why am I talking about it now??? I used to cut down the amount I would take once summer hit. Now, I don’t. The body produces vitamin D when exposed to the sun. I would cut back the dosage because I would not want to get too much vitamin D. Turns out that the body will not over-produce vitamin D. If you have enough, the body intelligently stops producing it. So… I now take 5,000 I.U. of vitamin D year-round.
3. Words (and concept) I recently learned…
Humans use landmarks to navigate space. We use buildings and streets when giving directions or navigating through our days. We use landmarks to navigate time as well. The landmarks, such as the first day of the year, your birthday, or the first day of Spring, are what social scientists call temporal landmarks. These are great days to start new things. We all set New Year’s resolutions (probably the most popular temporal landmark in terms of goal setting), but most fail. Guess what? Author Daniel Pink, in his eye-opening book When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, lists eighty-six (86) days that act as temporal landmarks… great days to make a fresh start. I won’t list them all, but here are some… the first day of the month (12)… Mondays (52)… your birthday… the first day of a new season (4). If you’ve fallen off the wagon with trying to adopt a new habit or healthier lifestyle, you don’t have to wait long to pick a good day to start over. Pay attention to temporal landmarks, and use them to your advantage. And DO NOT wait until January 1st!
