1. An “effect” I gave thought to this week…
There is something called the Hawthorne Effect which refers to the fact that people behave differently when they know they are being watched. Basically… we try harder and perform better when others are watching what we do. Something to think about. Should you structure certain areas of your life where others can see you… working out at the gym versus at home… working at the office versus working from home… hiring a coach or personal trainer versus trying to improve on your own… trying another diet on your own versus engaging in structured program (like ours!)? Simply put… humans tend to work harder when others are watching. The Hawthorne Effect has shown this to be true. (If you feel like you work just as hard on your own, I will not argue with you on that. But make sure you are being completely honest when assessing these behaviors. I realized I would do much better under a watchful eye.)
2. Fictitious (but thought-provoking) condition I heard this week…
I saw a video clip where comedian Jimmy Carr stated that many in our society are suffering with “Life Dysmorphia.” Most have heard of body dysmorphia, defined as “a mental illness characterized by constant worrying over a perceived or slight defect in appearance.” Well, most people seem to be suffering with worrying over the perceived or slight imperfections in their lives. Keys words here… perceived and slight. We complain, compare, and nitpick about all that’s wrong with our lives, but most have pretty darn good lives. We underappreciate the lives we have… and over-complain about too much. Think about this… the next time you’re taking a hot shower, realize that just about nobody had access to a hot shower just 100 years ago. Take a moment and, instead of thinking about things you don’t like about your life, think about three things you really like about it. Life dysmorphia can be cured!🙂 Check out that quick video clip of Jimmy Carr talking about life dysmorphia… as well as a concept about thinking about your 30-year-older self. I found it SUPER powerful!!!
3. Quote I love…
“Ignore advice from anyone who does not live the life you want to live.”
-from a video clip of “Life Lessons You Need To Hear” from Anthony Hopkins
