1. Book I just finished…
I just finished The Wisdom of the Bullfrog: Leadership Made Simple (But Not Easy), a book by Admiral William H. McRaven. It’s an easy read and loaded with great quotes, stories, insights, and strategies related to leadership. Admiral McRaven, who also wrote the best-selling book Make Your Bed, served as a Navy Seal for 37 years. The title “Bullfrog” is given to the longest serving Seal on active duty, which he earned in 2011. Here are a handful of chapter titles that I really liked and that may give you some insight into the content of the book…When In Command, Command… The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday… Hope Is Not a Strategy… When in Doubt, Overload… and, Always Have a Swim Buddy. He uses his personal experiences and stories as a Navy Seal to make great and impactful points. It is also available on Audible if you prefer listening to it. It’s worth reading (or listening to), and I will surely be gifting this book to others in the future. Oh… and what’s it got to do with wellness? Everything! Leading our employees, co-workers, and families well is a must… but these same principles are essential when leading our own lives. And these principles apply to what we eat, how much we exercise, our sleep habits, our relationships, and managing our daily thoughts and actions. 2. Old photo I came across…
I was cleaning out a drawer and came across this old photo… a pic of the pyramid we used to do at the end of every show when I skied for the Sea World Water Ski Team. I was fortunate enough to ski on that team for four seasons here in Aurora. What an INCREDIBLE job! So fun! One lesson I definitely took away from skiing professionally is that if you want to get better at something… get around people that know what they are doing… people that do it better than you… and have those people teach you. My skill level went up exponentially once I started skiing with some of the best skiers in the world. Like many of you that live locally, driving past what was once Sea World and Geauga Lake, I get a sense of sadness to this day that those parks are gone. Lots of great memories!
