1. Something I read…
James Clear (author of the very good book, Atomic Habits) puts out a weekly newsletter on Thursdays, called 3-2-1 Thursday, which includes 3 ideas, 2 quotes, and 1 question. It’s loaded with wisdom (You can check it out here). Two weeks ago, it included this little nugget that I thought was simple, yet profound, and got me thinking. I re-looked at it a few times since… which is why I felt compelled to share it.
How to Be Unhappy:
-stay inside all day
-move as little as possible
-spend more than you earn
-take yourself (and life) too seriously
-look for reasons why things won’t work
-always consume, never contribute
-resent the lucky and successful
-never say hello first
-be unreliable
Invert for happiness:
-get outside each day
-move: walk, exercise, dance
-spend less than you earn
-view life as play
-be the one who looks for solutions
-develop a bias to contribute and create
-learn from the lucky and successful
-be the first to say hello
-be reliable
2. Video clip that caught my attention…
Check out this video of the traffic in L.A. at Thanksgiving. The title of the video is “Insane traffic in L.A.,” which pretty much sums it up… because it is INSANE! I often think of people that spend a lot of time in their cars and hope they use that time productively. And I believe the commuting distance to work should be a huge factor on whether or not a job is worth taking/keeping. After all… if you could free up one hour a day, that adds up to nine 40-hour work weeks in one year. This video is from 2016, which I used because it was less than two minutes. It’s WILD!
3. Quote I love…
“I expect a miracle, I just don’t get crushed if one doesn’t happen.” -Me
That’s right… I’m quoting myself. When dealing with patients, and the healing process, time is always a factor. When discussing/explaining this to patients, they will often respond with, “Well, I don’t expect miracles.” Because I have seen so many remarkable things happen over the years with patients, many of which they themselves would describe as miracles, I actually do expect miracles. But because they don’t happen every time, I don’t get crushed or give up hope if they don’t. So… expect miracles… just don’t get crushed if they don’t happen.
