1. Great news I heard this week…
Texas just made history! Senate Bill 25 passed unanimously. This restores daily PE (physical education), eliminates toxic additives from school meals, and prioritizes real nutrition education. This is a HUGE step in the right direction to reverse the devastating physical and mental state of today’s children. All states MUST follow. The state of our health, and children’s health in particular, MUST be priority #1. Right now, it is pathetic, but with changes like the one just passed in Texas, we will see massive improvements. And I like agendas that EVERYONE can agree on… like improving the health of America. I saw the news in an Instagram post made by Dr. Mark Hyman…
2. Word I came across…
People are often worried about colds, flus, and other viruses. For most, these come and go with just a mild interference in daily life. Something far worse, far more dangerous, is affluenza. Affluenza is defined by Google’s AI as “extreme materialism and consumerism associated with the pursuit of wealth and success and resulting in a life of chronic dissatisfaction, debt, overwork, stress, and impaired relationships.” It results from chasing these five things… possessions, achievements, looks (personal appearance), money, and status. Symptoms associated with affluenza are guilt, social isolation, lack of motivation, materialism and consumerism, strained personal relationships, depression, and anxiety. So be aware of affluenza, and work to cure yourself of it. How? By remaining focused on what truly matters in life, doing deep, meaningful work, focusing on the well-being and needs of others, and following your heart. You can read more about affluenza in my blog from last week by clicking here.
3. Exciting moment last week…
The NCAA Wrestling Championships were last week, and it was loaded with excitement. The MOST exciting moment was the last match of the night, the heavyweight match, between the heavily favored Gable Steveson (Univ. of Minnesota) and Wyatt Hendrickson (Oklahoma State). Steveson is a 2-time national champion, was on a 73-match win streak, and is an Olympic gold medalist. By all accounts… unbeatable. Well… Hendrickson beat him. Wow! Possibly the biggest upset in NCAA wrestling history. Hendrickson, a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force, won the title. Several things I LOVE about this… he came out with the American flag on his back… he beat the odds… seeing his brother jumping up and down and his father crying… seeing and hearing the crowd go absolutely wild… and seeing the emotional and overwhelming response he had to winning. In the post-victory interview, he said he had the story of David vs. Goliath in his head all week, having “the mindset of a champion” and “the vision of victory.” In another interview, he noted that “the match is won before you step on the mat.” POWERFUL stuff! Just a reminder to us all that hard work pays off… never say never… and don’t underestimate the power of mindset and vision. Watch the 1.5-minute clip of ESPN’s coverage of the stunning victory below…
