1. Great podcast I listened to this week…
Somehow, Tim Ferris manages to keep me interested with almost 2-hour long podcasts. Podcast number #444 is with Hugh Jackman… and it’s a great one! I always wonder what big stars are like in real life and was so happy to find that Hugh Jackman is down to earth, honest, and humble. The description of the podcast is this… Hugh Jackman on Best Decisions, Daily Routines, The 85% Rule, Favorite Exercises, Mind Training, and Much More. I am constantly sharing wisdom on living the wellness lifestyle and being the best version of you. I loved that Hugh Jackman is very clear on his priorities and is living his best life in all areas…his marriage, career, family life, etc. And he has made it a priority to take care of himself physically and mentally so that he can be at peak performance in everything he does. So much good stuff in this podcast!
2. Series we started watching…
We started watching Alone, a reality television show that Wikipedia describes like this… “It follows the self-documented daily struggles of 10 individuals… as they survive in the wilderness for as long as possible using a limited amount of survival equipment.” The one that lasts the longest wins $500K.We are hooked! I have always been intrigued by our ancestors and their resiliency, toughness, and resourcefulness. This show gives us a glimpse into what it really takes to live off the land. We are just finishing the first season (there are six seasons). Two things that caught my attention… after days and days of rain, when the sun finally came out, several contestants did the same thing… walked out by the water, spread their arms, looked up, and were so grateful for the sunshine. The other thing… the power of loneliness. Hunger, shelter issues, and weather are all big issues, but being alone, away from family, friends, or any other humans, crushes these guys. Humans are pack animals and don’t do well isolated and alone. It also made me think about the collateral damage to those that are not around family and friends during this time of the virus. Want to feel better about the lifestyle and luxuries you take for granted every day?… check out Alone.
3. Craziest story I heard this week in my practice…
With Covid-19 going on, I have heard a lot of crazy stories. When a patient told me that her elderly friend was really struggling with her asthma while wearing a mask, I recommended she call her primary doctor and look into getting an exemption form. There are no clear guidelines for doctors to give these exemption forms, and they have to be careful with some trying to get these forms for fraudulent reasons, but it makes sense that if the risk of wearing a mask outweighs a potential benefit, they should be allowed to be exempt. Here is the crazy part of the story… her doctor told her that they would not give her an exemption form for the mask BECAUSE she has asthma. That she should wear the mask all day long, even in the house. EVEN IN HER OWN HOME??? Folks… I know the rules continue to change, therefore I am not giving you medical advice or telling you to wear the mask or not, but that is ABSURD! Because there is such controversy over these masks and so many uncertain details (type of mask, materials used to make the mask, are they to protect you or the people around you), one thing you have to rely on is COMMON SENSE.
