1. Cartoon I saw this week…
I saw a cartoon this week that caught my attention. Like a lot of good cartoons, at first, they make you chuckle… then, they make you think. This cartoon is simple, well done, and unfortunately, pretty spot on. I know most people feel that the medical system is too business-like these days…and that’s because… it is. The first question asked in a doctor’s office used to be, “Where does it hurt?” These days, that first question is, “What insurance do you have?” The worst part… we are paying more, yet getting worse care and worse outcomes. And the influence that the drug companies and insurance companies have over the system has taken it from a caring, personalized system, to a profit-driven, money-motivated system. NOT GOOD! And I feel for all the good doctors that are stuck in a bad system. I have medical doctor friends and have utilized great medical doctors that mean well, try hard, and have huge, caring hearts, and they share the same frustrations that I have. It’s hard for these men and women to practice the way they know they should and could in a system that is broken.
2. Thought provoking video I saw this week…
I love watching or reading something that causes me to pause and think. This video actually stopped me in my tracks. It is thought-provoking, pertinent, and POWERFUL! It’s called Time Will Tell video, and it’s directed by Cole Bennet. It says the speech was written by his mother and narrated by his grandfather. The video is really well done… and the message is SO GOOD! One of my favorite parts… “The clock on the wall is not your enemy, it’s your witness. It sees how often you choose fear over action, comfort over calling, busy over present.” (Thanks, Luke M. for sharing!)
3. Documentary I watched this week…
I love documentaries. I love documentaries about extraordinary people. There are several great documentaries out about mountain climbers (I’ve posted about a few), and we watched another one this week. It is called Meru. “This documentary follows three elite mountain climbers as they scale the Shark’s Fin on Mount Meru in India, one of the world’s most difficult peaks.” It is mind blowing! These guys think differently than ordinary humans. There are many incredible parts, but the part that blew me away is when one of the climbers cracks open his skull in a skiing accident four months before their second attempt to conquer Mount Meru. He also broke two vertebrae in his neck and severed the blood supply to one side of his brain. Told he would unlikely walk again, he does the unthinkable. I hope I’m not spoiling anything, but even if I am, watching this documentary will leave you shaking your head. My favorite part… that climber being worked on and having his neck adjusted by his chiropractor after the accident and during his recovery. Very cool! Watch the trailer below. And I recommend watching the documentary. You’ll catch yourself thinking these guys are crazy… Why would they do these things?… Is it worth it? But… I found myself being moved by what they were doing… impressed with their abilities… and feeling an understanding of why they would push themselves like they do. And in regards to the is it worth it question… ABSOLUTELY… as that inner drive and inner voice comes with extreme risk and danger, BUT… if ignored, would lead these guys to emptiness and incompleteness. To borrow a line from the Time Will Tell video above… are you “choosing comfort over calling?” They seem to be CALLED to the mountain. Check it out…
