1. Word you should know…
Iatrogenesis… the causation of a disease, a harmful complication, or other ill effect by any medical activity, including diagnosis, intervention, error, or negligence.(Wikipedia) Iatrogenesis is injury, harm, or death that was caused by the medical care given. It is estimated that these medical errors result in as many as 225,000 deaths per year in the United States. To put this in perspective, the third leading cause of death is medical errors. WOW!!! This means that your super smart, well-intentioned, big-hearted doctors make A LOT of mistakes. So do not confuse critical thinking, asking questions, and skepticism for anti-medicine, conspiracy theory, or stupidity. If you don’t believe that our medical system kills a quarter of a million people each year due to mistakes, here is an article from John Hopkins Medicine (it’s from 2016, so the numbers surely are worse now).
2. Movie scene I re-watched this week…
Someone earlier this week asked me what my favorite movie is. My favorite movie is Braveheart. And one of my favorite scenes of ALL TIME is when William Wallace (Mel Gibson) gives the Freedom Speech. I’ve watched this scene countless times. It does two things… reminds me how weak we have become as men, women, and leaders, and… reminds me that there are many things worth fighting for, and definitely things worth dying for. Here is that scene… The Freedom Speech…
3. Quote I love…
“Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
