1. Quote I love…
Two weeks ago, the John Carroll wrestling team unveiled its new (awesome) wrestling room. On the wall, in large print, was a quote that I have read and thought about several times since. It is a GREAT and NEEDED… and VERY TRUE… reminder.
”Discipline is the whole key to being successful. We all get 24 hours a day. It’s the only fair thing: it’s the only thing that’s equal. It’s up to us as to what we do with those 24 hours.” -Sam Huff
2. Wellness tip…
We are looking down way too much. Computers and phones are keeping our heads in a position that causes A LOT of added tension on our necks… which adversely affects our spinal cord, nerves, and neck muscles. We used to call it Military Neck, but now it is being called Tech Neck. See the image below to see just how much additional pressure is added with each increased degree of forward flexion of the neck (image taken from a blog posted by physio-central.com). Looking down too much is bad, holding your head in a neutral position is better, but something I found very interesting is that looking up is much better. Turns out, looking up has a positive impact on your mood and your pattern of thought. Think about looking up at the sky, at the canopies of trees, at birds flying overhead, or at impressive artistic and creative structures. There is data suggesting that there are health benefits from this looking up. You can read a short but interesting article about this in Psychology Today, titled Look Up: The Surprising Joy of Raising Your Gaze. You can read that by clicking here. Pay attention to your head position. It matters!
3. Crazy stat I read this week…
Americans spend more money on lottery tickets than on movies, video games, music, sporting events, and books combined. That is a SAD state of affairs. We are a society that relies on hoping we get rich… rather than taking massive action to get rich. Another (unrelated) stat that caught me off guard this week… there are 42 million Americans on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Setting aside all of the political and governmental issues around this program lately with the government shutdown, I was blown away to learn that SO MANY Americans qualify for this program. It is shameful that we have so many people in need of assistance.
