1. Wording I’m working on this week…
I have read about it before (and you likely have also), but this week I read it again. We know words are VERY powerful. Simply using the words “I get to” instead of “I have to” can have a profound effect on your attitude, enthusiasm, and outcomes. After seeing a patient this week suffering with severe health issues that impair his daily living, I caught myself being extremely grateful for being able to perform the most mundane tasks… such as taking out the trash, doing a workout, and even picking up the dog poop in the yard. To be healthy enough to bend, lift, and twist to perform these tasks is a blessing. And the fact that they come to pick up our trash, that I have the ability to improve the function of my body, and that I get to share time with the two awesome dogs that produce that never-ending supply of poop, are all things for me to be grateful for. So instead of starting so many sentences with a whiny “I have to,” I’m trying to switch it to “I get to.” Try it! It’ll feel awkward at first, but I promise it will make a positive difference in your day.
2. Book I pulled out this week to re-read…
Jack Canfield’s book, The Success Principles: How To Get From Where You Are To Where You Want To Be, is a must-have. Originally published in 2004, this book is one that you can read straight through (which I did), or jump around, reading the 67 principles in whatever order you prefer. You can then go back to re-read principles from time to time as a reference guide (as I have done over the past 15 years). According to the description on Amazon… “Not merely a collection of good ideas, this book spells out the 67 timeless principles and practices used by the world’s most successful men and women.” Click here for the Amazon link.
3. Podcast I’ve been listening too…
I’ve been listening to (and loving) the podcast Smartless, hosted by actors Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. I love it because they are loaded with hilarious dialogue, they are only one hour long, and I get some great insight into the background of their guests, which are other actors. I’m always intrigued with how superstars got started, their struggles, and the things that helped them breakout. Guests like Bradley Cooper, David Spade, Jerry Seinfeld, and many more, share some great stories, joke with each other, make fun of each other, and share personal stories that help you get to know them a little better. When I’m in the mood for a lighter listen that I know will have me laughing out loud, I listen to an episode of Smartless. It is NOT rated PG, and they can be ruthless with each other, but I enjoy it. I’ll be listening to the newest episode, with Chris Pratt, sometime this weekend.
