1. Great clip I saw this week…
Dr. Zach Bush is one expert that I love listening to. He’s super well-spoken, has great information and insights, and might be the smartest person in the wellness space (a triple board-certified MD). In this quick clip, he highlights how stress results in increased strength and reminds us that friction causes growth. The only way a bone gets thicker and stronger is by placing it under stress, causing microfractures in the bone, and having it repair with thicker and stronger bone fibers. In our efforts to insulate ourselves (and our children) from any stress or friction, the result is stagnancy, weakness, and a whole host of chronic diseases. Watch the clip below. You can also read my blog this week (click here) where I expound on the relationship between stress and strength and the requirement for friction in order to have growth.
2. Ridiculous thing I heard this week…
A patient was told by his primary medical doctor that his cholesterol was high and that he needed to start taking a statin drug, which is a cholesterol lowering drug. I could do an hour-long lecture on how detrimental these can be, how the numbers they use to justify treatment are inaccurate, and how I believe that at some point in the near future, they will be telling us what a huge mistake it has been to put so many people on these drugs. Anyway… he asked the doctor if he could modify his diet for a couple months, re-run the bloodwork, and see if he could lower the numbers naturally before going on the medication. Here’s the ridiculous part… the doctor said NO! This is absolute insanity!!! Remember… YOU are in charge of your health. Doctors are there to guide you, but it’s your body. I believe, unless there is an absolute crisis or emergency, lifestyle modifications should be THE FIRST STEP when trying to address health concerns. For that doctor to say “NO” to the idea of him trying a change in his diet first should be considered malpractice. BE CAREFUL WHO YOU LISTEN TO!!! (I hear stories like this every day in practice. Scary!)
3. A few quotes I read this week that I loved…
“Don’t blame the clown for acting like a clown. Ask yourself why you keep visiting the circus.”
“Learn to enjoy life without needing an audience to see that you’re enjoying life.”
“Are you climbing a mountain for the world to see you? Or for you to see the world?”
