1. New “condition” I learned about last week…
I have a four-year-old patient who was scheduled to undergo surgery to remove her tonsils and adenoids. The surgeon canceled the surgery, stating that she felt the child is suffering from a condition she calls Milk and Cookies Disease (MCD), also known as Milk and Cookie Syndrome. The doctor’s name is Dr. Julie Wei. She suggests that a lot of the conditions young children are suffering from, see doctors for, and get medication and surgery for, are a result of too much sugar and dairy, especially when consumed before bed. The symptoms include runny nose, chronic cough, sore throat, sleep disturbances, and even symptoms mimicking allergies and colds. The sugar and dairy can increase stomach acid, thus causing acid reflux, which can cause these symptoms. These children are often misdiagnosed with allergies and infections. I was THRILLED to hear the surgery was canceled and that dietary changes were recommended. WOW! I’ve seen incredible results in children and adults when sugar and dairy consumption were reduced or eliminated. You can learn more at Dr. Wei’s website by clicking here. And you can watch her Ted Talk below or by clicking here.
2. Quote I love…
“You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.”
We were at a friend’s party last week (thanks, Greg and Stacie!), and I saw a wooden block with this quote on it. I love it because it is so true. Humans are very resilient, tough, and strong. And we never know just how strong we really are… until we are put into situations where we HAVE to be strong. You are much stronger than you realize.
3. Word I love…
I love the word independence… which is defined as the ability to live your life without being helped or influenced by other people (Cambridge English Dictionary). Nobody wants to be under the control of another. One thing I feel very blessed about is living in a country that allows us the freedoms and independence that we have. We will always have complaints about things in this country, but we need to stop and realize just how good we have it. I got to thinking about this because it is the 4th of July… a.k.a. Independence Day. This is a day to reflect on how fortunate we are to be as free as we are. A little trivia… “By remarkable coincidence, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, the only two signatories of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as presidents of the United States, both died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration.” (Wikipedia) HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!!
